dr. fred d. shepard was a popular american medical missionary who spent most of his adult life working in the ottoman empire at aintab, central turkey. he turned his mission station into a major relief center, where he treated local armenians, kurds, and turks. in 1915 he contracted typhus working amongst victims of the armenian genocide and died in december that year.

since its [original] publication in 1920 this book has touched a different readership from what its author alice shepard riggs probably intended. she wrote shepard of aintab as a sunday school text to instruct and inspire american middle school young people, hoping to excite them to lives of christian service. it may have had some effect in that regard, but the people who have told me about it have been others, people of armenian and turkish descent who knew or have heard about doctor fred shepard and his thirty-three years of remarkable work in turkey

such a book runs the risk of becoming outdated. indeed its language and style are of a different era. reading, one thinks 'surely she exaggerates. no one could have done all this. no one could be that good. this adoring daughter describes her father as if he were superman!" as one of my great-nephews who was inspired by reading the life of his great-great grandfather said "shepard of aintab reads more like hagiography than biography " yet i do not believe alice riggs embroidered the events of her fathers life. by many accounts, he really does seem to have been the skilled physician, the superb horseman, the tireless worker, the devout christian, and the lovable human being she describes.
